When you add Jetwriter AI (formerly ChatGPT Writer), Chrome warns that it can "Read and change all your data on all websites". Chrome shows this for every extension that works on any site you visit. Jetwriter needs it to put its AI Reply button and its toolbar on the sites you use, to read the email or page you use it on, and to put the reply you choose into the text box. It doesn't send a page's text to Jetwriter until you ask it for a response there, and it never sends an email or message for you.
Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi show a similar warning when you install it.
What "read and change" means for Jetwriter
- Read: when you click AI Reply, select text, or open Jetwriter on a page, it reads that conversation, selection or page so the AI can use it in your reply. Otherwise it only watches for where to show its buttons, and for text you select. See Is Jetwriter AI safe? What it reads and keeps.
- Change: it adds its buttons to the page, and when you click Insert, it puts the reply into the site's text box. You check the reply and send it yourself.
- All websites: Jetwriter has an AI Reply button in Gmail, Outlook, WhatsApp Web, LinkedIn, Slack, X, Zoho Mail, Zendesk and Freshdesk, and works on any other site through selected text, its toolbar icon and its keyboard shortcut. That's why it asks for every site rather than a list.
The other permissions
Jetwriter asks for three more permissions. None of them adds a warning when you install it.
| Permission | What Jetwriter uses it for |
|---|---|
| Storage | Saves your sign-in and your Jetwriter settings in your browser. |
| Scripting | Starts Jetwriter in tabs that were already open when you installed or updated it, and in a tab where it isn't running yet when you click its icon. |
| Context menus | Adds Jetwriter AI to the menu that opens when you right-click a page. |
The extension also lets jetwriter.ai talk to it, so signing in or out on the website signs the extension in or out too. See Sign out or switch to another account.
Limit the sites Jetwriter can access
You can let Jetwriter work on some sites only. On the other sites, its AI Reply button and the toolbar for selected text don't appear, and it can't read those pages when you open it there.
- Type
chrome://extensionsin the address bar (edge://extensionsin Edge,brave://extensionsin Brave) and press Enter. - Under Jetwriter AI, click Details.
- Under Site access, choose On specific sites and add each site you use Jetwriter on, such as
mail.google.com. Or choose On click, so Jetwriter gets access to a site only when you click its icon in the toolbar there.
To bring the buttons back everywhere, set Site access to On all sites and reload your tabs.
If you only want the toolbar on selected text to stop appearing on some sites, Jetwriter's own settings can hide it while keeping everything else: see Hide the Jetwriter popup on a site, or everywhere.
Connecting Gmail is a separate permission
The extension's permissions don't give Jetwriter access to your Gmail account. Connecting Gmail, so replies follow the way you write, is optional and separate: Google asks for it on its own screen when you connect. See Connect Gmail so replies use your past emails, or disconnect it.
If you'd rather not give it access
Remove the extension: open chrome://extensions, find Jetwriter AI and click Remove. Removing it doesn't cancel a paid plan: see Cancel your Jetwriter AI subscription. You can still use Jetwriter without the extension in the web app at jetwriter.ai/app.
