Is Jetwriter AI safe? What it reads and keeps

Applies to
Every plan. The extension and the web app
Updated

Jetwriter AI (formerly ChatGPT Writer) uses the text on a page only when you use Jetwriter there: the email or chat you click AI Reply in, the page you open Jetwriter on, or the text you select. When you send a request, that text and your request go through Jetwriter's servers to an AI model, which writes the response. Jetwriter never sends an email or message for you, and it doesn't sell your personal information.

The full details are in Jetwriter's Privacy Notice. This article explains the parts people ask about most.

What the extension reads, and when

The extension runs on the sites you visit so its buttons can appear there, but it uses a page's text only when you do one of these:

When youJetwriter reads
Click AI Reply in Gmail, Outlook, WhatsApp Web, LinkedIn or another supported siteThe conversation you clicked it in: the email thread, the chat's messages, or the post and its comments, with names and the subject, plus your name to sign the reply. Not the rest of your inbox.
Click AI Compose in a new email or messageYour name, and the subject and who it's to if you've filled them in.
Select text and use the toolbar that appears, or right-click it and choose Jetwriter AIOnly the text you selected.
Open Jetwriter with its toolbar icon or keyboard shortcut, or right-click a page with nothing selected and choose Jetwriter AIThe text of the page you're on, so you can ask about it.
Attach a file or record your voice in the Jetwriter windowThat file or recording.

When Jetwriter has read a page, the Jetwriter window shows Page: and the page's title above the box you type in. To leave the page out, click the × next to it (Remove Context) before you send.

What happens when you send a request

  1. Your request, the text Jetwriter read and any file you attached go to Jetwriter's servers.
  2. The servers send them to an AI model, which writes the response: the model you picked, from OpenAI, Anthropic or Google. If you use your own API key, the request still goes through Jetwriter's servers, with your key. When a request needs it, the AI can also search the web or read a web page.
  3. The response appears in the Jetwriter window. Nothing goes into the page until you click Insert, and nothing is sent until you click the site's own Send button.

Like any online service, Jetwriter also relies on other service providers, such as hosting and storage. The Privacy Notice lists them by type in Who will your information be shared with?

What else a reply can use

Besides the page and your request, a reply can use what you've chosen to give Jetwriter:

  • Personalize AI: what you've written about yourself and how you like to reply, while its switch is on. See Tell Jetwriter about you, and how to reply (Personalize AI).
  • Writing style: the style you pick in the Jetwriter window, including styles you've made yourself.
  • Memory: details from your past chats with Jetwriter. It's on by default. To turn it off in the extension, click your profile icon, then Settings, and switch off Reference past conversations under Memory. In the web app, open Settings, then Memory, or go to jetwriter.ai/app#settings/memory. The switch applies to the browser you change it in.
  • Gmail, if you connect it: read-only access to your Gmail, so replies follow the way you write and can use details from past emails. Connecting is optional, and you can disconnect at any time: see Connect Gmail so replies use your past emails, or disconnect it.
  • Google Calendar, if you connect it in the web app's settings under Calendar Integration: read-only access, so replies can take your free time into account.

What Jetwriter keeps

  • Your account: your name, email address and plan. Payment details are stored by Stripe, the company that handles Jetwriter's payments.
  • What you save in Jetwriter: your Personalize AI details and your own writing styles.
  • Usage information, such as which features you use and on which page, as the Privacy Notice describes in What information do we collect?

How long information is kept, and how to ask to see, change or delete it, are in the Privacy Notice: How long do we keep your information? and What are your privacy rights?. To delete your account, see Delete your Jetwriter AI account.

Why the extension asks for access to all websites

When you install it, Chrome warns that Jetwriter can "Read and change all your data on all websites". Chrome shows that for every extension that works on any site. See Why the extension asks to read and change data on websites.
