Write in another language, or stop unwanted translation

Every plan. AI Reply, the Jetwriter window and the web app
Updated

Jetwriter AI has no language setting. It writes in the language that fits what it reads: your request and the message you're answering. To get a reply in a particular language, say so in your request, such as "Reply in Spanish". To have every reply follow the same rule, write it once in Personalize AI, for example "Reply in the language of the message I'm answering."

This works in AI Reply in Gmail, Outlook, WhatsApp Web and the other sites, in the Jetwriter window on any page, and in the web app. Jetwriter's own buttons and menus are in English only, but replies can be in other languages.

How Jetwriter picks the language

Nothing in Jetwriter chooses a language for you. The AI looks at what you typed and at the message you're replying to, and writes in the language that seems to fit. When both are in the same language, the reply is too.

When they differ, the AI may pick either one. For example, if a client writes in German and you type your request in English, such as "say yes to Monday", the reply can come back in English. Naming the language in your request, or in Personalize AI, removes the guesswork.

Ask for a language in your request

Add the language to what you type in the Jetwriter window:

  • "Yes to Monday, reply in German"
  • "Decline politely, in French"
  • "Reply in the same language as the email"
  • "Answer in Hindi, informal"

If a reply comes back in the wrong language, type "Write this in Spanish" in the box at the bottom of the Jetwriter window and press Enter. Jetwriter rewrites the same reply in that language. Each new version uses one AI response from your plan.

Set your language once in Personalize AI

To stop repeating it, put your language rule in Personalize AI. Jetwriter follows it in every reply while Personalize AI is on.

  1. Open Jetwriter, for example with AI Reply in Gmail, and click your profile icon at the top right of its window.
  2. Click Personalize AI. The Personalize Your AI window opens.
  3. In How should AI respond to you?, write your rule. Pick one that matches how you work:
    • "Reply in the language of the message I'm answering."
    • "Always write in British English."
    • "Write in Spanish, even when the message is in English."
  4. Click Save. Saving also turns Personalize AI on in this browser.

In the web app, the same box is under Settings, in Personalize AI: jetwriter.ai/app#settings/personalizeAI. For more on what to write there, see Tell Jetwriter about you, and how to reply (Personalize AI).

A request you type in the window can still ask for something else for one reply, such as "this one in English".

Translate text you've selected

To translate text on a page or in a box you're typing in, select it, point at the blue dot that appears, and click Translate on the toolbar. It translates into the language shown next to Translate under More actions, which starts as your browser's language. See Fix, rewrite or translate selected text.

If replies keep switching language

  • Check Personalize AI. A rule written there, such as "Write in US English", applies to every reply, even when you're answering a message in another language. Change the rule, or name the language in your request for that one reply.
  • Check the switch. Personalize AI can be off in one browser and on in another: click your profile icon in the Jetwriter window and look at the switch next to Personalize AI.
  • Write your request in the language you want. A request in the same language as the reply you want leaves the AI nothing to guess.
