Use Jetwriter in Outlook on the web

Applies to
Every plan. Outlook on the web in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera or Vivaldi on a computer, work and personal accounts
Updated

Jetwriter AI works in Outlook on the web, the version of Outlook you open in your browser. Open an email and click AI Reply under it, or click AI Reply next to Send in a reply or a new email. Say in a few words what to write, then click Insert and send the email from Outlook yourself. Jetwriter doesn't appear in the Outlook desktop apps for Windows or Mac.

You need the Jetwriter AI extension (formerly ChatGPT Writer) in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera or Vivaldi on a computer, and you need to be signed in to it. Each email uses one AI response from your plan; the Free plan includes 15 a month.

Which Outlook works

Jetwriter works when the address bar shows one of these addresses:

AddressUsed for
outlook.live.comPersonal accounts: Outlook.com, Hotmail and Live
outlook.office.comWork and school accounts (Microsoft 365)
outlook.office365.comWork and school accounts (Microsoft 365)
outlook.cloud.microsoftWork and school accounts (Microsoft 365)

It doesn't work in Outlook for Windows (classic or new), Outlook for Mac, or the Outlook app on a phone, because the extension only runs inside a browser on a computer. If you use one of those apps, open your mailbox in the browser instead: sign in at outlook.live.com for a personal account, or outlook.office.com for a work or school account.

Reply to an email

  1. In Outlook on the web, open the email you want to answer.
  2. Click AI Reply (1), under the email next to Outlook's Reply. Outlook opens a reply to everyone on the email (Reply all), and the Jetwriter window opens.

AI Reply shows under every email you open in Outlook on the web.

  1. AI Reply
  1. In the box that says "Tell AI what to write (e.g., 'Politely decline')", type what the reply should say, such as "Monday works, send me the new dates". A few words are enough: Jetwriter already reads the email thread.
  2. If you like, pick a Writing style and a Length, then press Enter or click the send arrow. The reply appears in a few seconds.
  3. Read it. To change it, type what to change in the box that says "Tell AI what to change (e.g., 'Shorter and more direct')" and send again.
  4. Click Insert. The reply goes into Outlook's reply box and the Jetwriter window closes.
  5. Check the reply and its recipients, edit it like any email, then click Outlook's Send (1). To write it again, click AI Reply (2) next to Send.

The reply waits in Outlook's reply box, next to Send and AI Reply, until you send it.

  2. AI Reply

To answer only the sender, click Outlook's Reply first, then click AI Reply next to Send in the reply box.

Write a new email

  1. In Outlook on the web, click New mail.
  2. If you like, type the subject first: Jetwriter uses it.
  3. Click AI Reply, next to Send at the top of the new message.
  4. Describe the email in a few words, such as "Invite the team to Friday's review at 2pm", and press Enter.
  5. Click Insert, check the email, add the recipients and send it from Outlook.

What AI Reply reads

AI Reply reads the email thread of the reply you're writing: the earlier messages, the subject, who the reply goes to, and your name. If Outlook hides the earlier messages in your reply, Jetwriter opens them to read them, so you may see them appear at the bottom of the reply box. It doesn't read the rest of your mailbox.
